Homesol jobs

Homesol occasionally has room for good people. If you have what it takes then we may have a career for you in green building consulting.

Although we are not currently actively looking for new people, our philosophy is that we don't create "the right livelihood", YOU do. If you meet the following qualifications or are willing and able to learn and work hard, you're welcome to submit an application:

  • Post secondary degree, technical college or at least equivalent life experience – required. If you've never really accomplished anything hard in your life and are looking for cushy work, this isn't the job for you.
  • Certified Energy Advisor (NRCan), LEED-AP for Homes (CaGBC), Certified Passive House Planner (PHI), RASDT (HRAI), BCIN Designer (Ministry of Housing) or other applicable certifications related to residential energy efficiency and sustainability – highly desirable.
  • Experienced blower door technician, able to perform accurate tests under all conditions, can diagnose and locate hidden air leaks, familiar with zone pressure diagnostics, multiple blower doors and pressurization testing – very useful skills to have already, but we can train you. In fact, if you think you know how to use a blower door already, chances are pretty good you've only just begun...
  • Experienced with energy modeling software such as HOT2K, including ability modeling room-by-room and MURBs – or at least a willingness and ability to learn, and a strong aptitude for geometry, reading plans / measuring on site, and working with computers. Even better: a working knowledge of Passive House Planning Package.
  • Driver’s license and reliable, fuel efficient vehicle, willing to travel throughout Eastern Ontario, must live within commuting distance of Almonte, Ontario, head office – required.
  • Extensive background in hands-on residential building and renovations. Able to relate with professional designers, builders, trades and renovators as well as homeowners. If you don't know more than our clients, then you're worse than useless to them as a consultant!
  • Understanding of ecoENERGY, Ontario Home Energy Program, ENERGY STAR, R-2000, LEED, Passive House, etc. (Of course, you DO know how to Google what you don't know, right?)
  • Excellent verbal and written (report writing) communication skills, meticulous record and time keeping. If you're not good at readin', writin' and 'rithmetic, you won't get far in life, and certainly not here!
  • Competency in MS Outlook, Excel & Word required. Ability in AutoCAD, Softplan or Sketchup an advantage. We're also looking for a good part-time architectural technologist.
  • ASNDT Level I or II Building Thermography certificate or equivalent thermal imaging experience an asset. But if you've only waved a cheap IR camera around and talked through your hat about what you think you see, please go get some real training before you say you can do thermal imaging.
  • Familiar with other related software such as THERM, WUFI, RETscreen, EE4, Passive House Planning Package, etc. Most of these are free downloads, if you're at all curious...
  • If you have a "sense of entitlement", like to stretch out your time and want to be spoon fed work, rather than being willing to learn on your own and continually expand your abilities to deliver the goods, this isn't the job for you. You should take pride in doing good work, be a dedicated team player, keen, energetic, smart, and passionate about sustainable green building and renovations. You should have a history of growth and learning new things. You're committed to continuous self-directed professional development and are always eager to learn more.
  • You are reliable, punctual, self-motivated, able to work independently, conscientious, trustworthy, good time manager with a professional attitude. Willing to work 40 hours a week. We have work for someone who wants to tackle new things and we offer flexible time scheduling, but if you want only the easy pickings and a four day weekend every week, please don't bother applying.
  • But most of all, we are looking for someone with a true passion for sustainable buildings, smart enough to know they don't know it all and never will, with an understanding of how green building relates to climate change and the future of our planet, and possessing a real burning desire to be a part of the Homesol team. If you just need a job and you're at all ambivalent about working here, please don't waste your time applying!

Full time (32 – 44 hours / week), expenses and mileage paid, wages and benefits commensurate with experience. But no matter your past job history, you have to start out proving to us what you're capable of in an entry level position, nobody starts at the top. There is considerable opportunities for advancement for the right candidate.

Please mail CV detailing qualifications, training and employment history, and a cover letter stating why you think we should hire you, and why you believe you would be an asset to our company and our clients, along with three references (at least two business related) and proof of any related certifications or degrees to:

Ross Elliott, President

Homesol Building Solutions

PO Box 1133

Almonte, ON  K0A 1A0

Please, people who want to be self-employed subcontractors, "part-timers" who don't really want to work, anyone who wants big bucks on day one, applicants who don't submit complete applications and those without the basic job requirements need not apply. Thank you for your interest in working for Homesol, we look forward to meeting you– but we're sorry to say only qualified candidates will be contacted for an interview.
